This 5-trail intersection in the woods of Duxbury, Massachusetts, shows its many years of wear. It also shows the connection between us and nature. The blazed, worn trails, the rich, full woods – flora and fauna, sights and sounds. The hundreds, perhaps thousands of foot passengers who have staked claim to this prize of passage for a century or more. And that’s just us.
The first and fourth trails are of a section of the Bay Circuit Trail (https://www.baycircuit.org/) that carries us from Round Pond close to Island Creek Pond, where we break off around a meandering cranberry bog to the pond’s edge. BCT is a seriously impressive connection of local foot paths carved from coastal Duxbury, on Massachusett’s South Shore, to Newburyport, anchoring the North Shore. We’ll always savor Rich Harbert’s masterful multi-part adventure along the 230-mile Circuit. Filled with stories and photos of four friends’ 2-year weekend journey, it is highly worthy of settling into with a cup of steaming tea.
This intersection always gives me pause. I turn and look and listen. It’s the rare occasion that finds others there. It inspires me to take new paths, whether here or elsewhere. And new paths always provide new adventures and reasons to breathe deeply.
